Steps Two and Three for Making Insurance Company Complaints

The reason that steps two and three are combined here is because you will want to take both steps if your issues aren’t resolved in step one.

The first thing that you will need to do is to contact your state’s Department of Insurance. In some states the Department of Insurance (DI) falls under the guise of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV).

Because every state operates differently, this will only be a brief rundown of what to expect when you contact the DI or the DMV.

If you choose to contact them online, you will be directed to a form that typically asks for rhe following:

  • your name
  • your address
  • your phone number
  • the name and address (corporate usually) of your insurance company

At this point you may get an open ended box that asks you to describe your complaint or a drop down box that gives you categories that your complaint might fall under. In either case, be as accurate as possible and leave emotion out of it.

A legitimate complaint will stand on its own, without any narrative from you about how angry you are.

You may or may not hear back about your complaint, depending on the reasons for your complaint. If it’s about being overcharged, you should get a response back (outside of the standard, thank you for your information form letter).

However, if it’s a customer service issue, the DI will follow up and post on their website that a complaint of this type has been made.

Any time the DI determines that a legitimate complaint has been made, they will post the complaint on their website so that anyone looking at the company can see what, if any, complaints that they have.

Better Business Bureau

The BBB follows up on every complaint it receives from a company registered with them (most insurance companies are) until a resolution of some sort is achieved.

It is important that you answer any questions that they may have and follow through on any requests you receive from them so that you can get your matter resolved.
